# Your Bürgerportal account: set it up once, use it again and again.

With your free Bürgerportal account, you can connect with participating organisations in your area. You choose which participating organisations you connect with. When more join later, simply use the same account.

The information on this website is available in several languages. The agreement for using your Bürgerportal account is concluded in German. Choosing a different website language does not change the language of the agreement.

## Get started with Bürgerportal in three steps

-

### Create an account

Register, confirm your email address and add a second authentication factor to secure your sign-in.

[Register now for free](https://app.buergerportal.de/open/registrieren)

-

### Choose an organisation

Find participating public authorities and organisations in your area and request a connection to your Bürgerportal account.

-

### Take care of things online

Once your access has been approved, you can submit applications and documents, read digital mail and exchange messages — depending on the services your organisation offers.

## Sign in securely. Preferably with a passkey.

Protect your Bürgerportal account from unauthorised access. A passkey makes this particularly simple and secure: sign in without a password and confirm access using, for example, your fingerprint, facial recognition or your device PIN.

Your passkey is tied to your device and provides additional protection against phishing. Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) also recommends using passkeys.

[The BSI’s recommendation on passkeys (PDF in German, pages 66–67)](https://www.bsi.bund.de/SharedDocs/Downloads/DE/BSI/Publikationen/Magazin/BSI-Magazin_2024_02.pdf?__blob=publicationFile&v=9#page=34)

### Extra protection with two-factor authentication

- A password can fall into the wrong hands. A second authentication factor adds another layer of protection to your Bürgerportal account.

- You can choose between secure ways to sign in — for example, a passkey or a password with an additional verification code. Depending on the method you choose, you receive this code through an authenticator app, by text message or by email.

- Passkeys are particularly convenient: you do not need a password and benefit from better protection against phishing.

## Passkeys and other ways to sign in

### Passkey

Our recommendation: sign in without a password using a digital access key and your device’s unlock method, such as your fingerprint, facial recognition or device PIN.

### Passkey hardware token

Use a passkey on a separate hardware token, such as a YubiKey. Your access key remains stored on the token.

### Authenticator app

Confirm your sign-in with the time-limited code from your authenticator app.

### Text message code

Receive a code by text message on your mobile phone and use it alongside your password to confirm your sign-in.

### Email code

Receive a code at your verified email address and use it alongside your password to confirm your sign-in.

## Connect with the organisations you need.

Search for participating organisations in your area and request access directly in your Bürgerportal account. You will find out which details the organisation needs to identify you.

Whether it is your local council, Jobcenter or a social services provider, you use the same Bürgerportal account for all connected organisations. Use this account to request additional access too.

### Your account. Your connections.

- You decide which organisations you request access to.

- Once the organisation approves your access, you can use its digital services.

- You alone choose which organisations to connect with. You can end individual connections at any time without deleting your account.

## Your organisation has not joined yet?

Let your organisation know that you would like to use its services online too. Give us its contact address and we will introduce it to Bürgerportal.
